How to Manage Emotions and Energies for Leadership Success during Covid19

“An Eagle uses the negative energy of a storm to fly even higher.” Eric Thomas

As an Influencer or a Leader, we bring with us two types of emotion and energy. We may choose to operate from either of the two emotions and energies whether in our corporate jobs, NGO or community work, family or any environment that we are in.

Some of you may have seen the picture  of a green life-filled tree compared with a dry and dead tree depicting the Positive and Negative Energy . The leaves of the life-filled tree depict emotions and behaviours that emanate positive energy from within us and into the surrounding environment. A few of those emotions and behaviours which generate positive energy are trust, giving, gratitude, kindness, creative, diligent, being joyful, forgiving etc.

The perspective that I want to share is  how we can practically and consciously choose behaviours that create positive energy within us and around us.

By the way, we all have both the emotions and energies inside us in varying quantity but it is up to us what we choose more often. Even I find that I switch between these two energies but remaining more conscious which one to choose and operate from.

As an influencer or a leader in our area of work, we first need to reflect which  energy do we bring? We also need to understand how we manage both the emotions and energies in our work , family and societal environment.

During this period of pandemic, when employees and people around are worried and insecure about their jobs or a slump in business, can you and I give practical help to find new business or jobs or help in increase in sales. As a leader of your team,  can we appreciate them regularly for what they do to keep each other motivated in this aura of anxiety and insecurity.

Can we be more giving, kind and supportive than being selfish and complaining . You may have heard this in the news that in the month of May this year, Sonu Sood, a well-known actor from Mumbai had mobilized resources and helped around 400 families of migrant workers to reach their hometowns and villages across India . Even my housing society arranged for grocery packets to help all our maids and other poor families in our area. So we all can become more giving both at our work and in society irrespective of whatever role/position we may be at.

Instead of worrying and feeling hopeless, can we show more creativity in our work as the demand for new services and products have increased. Be it new IT conferencing and collaboration software, apps, sanitizers and masks , contactless products, online products ,online coaching and counselling, online learning events that you and I  may have organized or attended.

Till a few months ago, there was Work From Home (WFH) policy in companies on who will WFH and when and for which roles . Now if you see almost 90% of employees  are working from home. So this pandemic has given all of us an opportunity to look at our perception and mindsets in a renewed way.  It has taught us to unlearn, relearn and create new ways of doing things.

As a leader of our people and at whatever level one may be, it is important to be more patient and forgiving towards genuine mistakes which are likely to happen due to stress during this time. Don’t keep monitoring your people on who is online or offline but let’s trust our people to deliver on the outcomes than insisting on their presence. Anyways they are at home and are accountable for their deliverables. Trust them. Trust will bring more positive energy in the environment.

And as employees and workers , one has to take up more responsibility to support your organization and leaders. It is easy as an employee to complain and find faults why your company is not doing things your way but do try to realize that your leaders and owners of businesses are under various kind of sales and productivity pressures. So fully support and cooperate with your managers and owners of your company.

Be responsible also by keeping yourself physically and mentally fit and healthy by doing any physical activity that you like. You could avoid constant feeding yourself with negative news and by people . I like to do body flexing exercises and brisk walking though I have been irregular lately. Every one hour one could get up from one’s seat and jog nearby. Take a walk to sip some water.

Yes this Covid-19 pandemic may continue for some more time but don’t allow fear, panic and loneliness to creep in. All leaders have a role to reduce this fear by providing counselling support in whatever possible ways.

I have also struggled to overcome depleting energies of being impatient for results, or getting disappointed with a close team and family member. However with some difficulty, I chose to forgive them for maintaining my tranquillity.

So what I have been doing is that I  read my holy scriptures, talk to close friends and relatives. I have also kept the Tree of Energy both on my mobile and laptop as a constant reminder to consciously choose and operate from positive energy.

I wish all of you abundance of positive energy on your path of Leadership. And yes do share and write on what practical actions do you take and suggest  to others to operate from Positive Emotions and Energies.
